My Classroom

Collaborative Learning

I like to create activities that allow my students to brainstorm, discuss, and work together to solve problems or make observations. For example, we create anchor charts and word walls to list ideas and vocabulary words about the themes we read about in Science and Social Studies. During Reading and Writing, my students like to use partner strategies such as "turn and talk" and "peanut butter and jelly" as well as completing collaborative writing activities using the "jigsaw" method. Also, my students love to work together on creating and investigating hypotheses in Science class.
Learning Centers

Each day my class rotates in small groups through various learning centers. Groups are student-centered and allow classmates to work together to deepen their understanding of classroom objectives through creativity or building activities, technology exploration, guided reading and partner reading, and collaborative writing activities.
Service Learning

Throughout the school year I teach my students about the importance of community and helping each other, as well as helping those that may be less fortunate. I teach my students to be humble, giving, and caring citizens. Each year we participate in several service projects, collecting money, food, and clothing for members of the community. Also, my students make crafts and visit senior citizens in a local nursing home. I also have family involvement days, allowing parents to come to school and participate in educational and service learning projects with their children.
